Mobilears – Audiology App for Testing Hearing Capacities

An FDA-Certified and HIPAA Compliant Audiology App for Testing Hearing Capacities

Mobile Development | Web Development | App Integration

Mobilears, an audiology medical application development for iPad to help patients test their hearing capacities with ease. It is an FDA, ANSI-certified, and HIPAA-compliant medical application that enables users to perform self-administered hearing tests, eliminating the need to travel to the hearing labs, thus offering convenient, cost-effective, and comfortable hearing test solution. The application features with a proprietary audio calibration (end-to-end encrypted) system, that is smart and accurate enough to work across different audio chipsets of varying iPad devices.

The Requirement

The client company wanted to develop an audiology medical app for testing hearing capacities of patients, anywhere, anytime, without the need for going to hearing labs. The application was required to be compatible with different iPads and hence, the client faced challenges to achieve the accurate and smart audio calibration to work across audio chipsets of different iPad devices.

The client approached Blue Whale Apps considering our expertise in iOS development and domain knowledge. To develop the hearing testing application on iPad, the client had specified the following requirements as part of the project:

  • Compliance with FDA, ANSI, and HIPAA standards
  • Smart audio calibration as per different iPad devices
  • Acoustic sound creation up to 70 decibels for audio testing
  • In-app purchase option for headphones with payment integration
  • Standardized sound adjustment as per patient’s hearing level
  • Privacy and security of patient’s data
  • Integration with patient care portals of clinics

The Solution

Blue Whale Apps started the project by documenting a detailed specification of the client’s audiology app development requirement. We started the initial stage by working closely with audiology labs and doctors to understand the hearing testing process. Here’s a step-by-step process we followed to develop the required hearing test solution on the iPad.

  • Created a proprietary audio calibration process accommodating various audio chipsets and headphones.
  • Deployed the solution on a HIPAA-compliant backend to ensure patient’s data privacy.
  • Certified and verified the audio by the authorized board along with the hearing equipment, sound amplitude, and frequency.
  • Audio engineering and testing that generated certified audiograms.
  • Measured and converted different sounds into digital hearable sounds.
  • Created an acoustic sound of up to 70 decibels for accurate testing of the app hearing capacity.
  • Integrated an ecommerce option to buy amplified versions of headphones with Stripe payment gateway.
  • Enabled geolocation and geofencing to locate nearby audiology labs.
  • Programmed hearing testing schedules and recommendations for the next clinic visit.
  • Integrated the application with different patient-care portals of clinics and audiology labs.

The Results

Blue Whale Apps developed an innovative and cost-effective application for testing the hearing capacities of patients with FDA, ANSI, and HIPAA-compliant backend. With this iPad application, both patients and audiologists can conduct self-administered hearing tests easily and record the test results in the backend portal. This patient care portal then enables admins to verify the validity of each test performed and provide recommendations to visit an expert if necessary.

  • Cost-effective, convenient, and comfortable solution.
  • Reduced testing efforts due to the elimination of the need to travel to hearing labs.
  • Better reporting and data management related to patient’s hearing conditions.
